UP Diliman
U.P. Diliman is the main campus of the University of The Philippines System. Entering through University Avenue, the Oblation welcomes you as you enter through the Administration Building entrance. It is a sculpture of a naked young man, looking up into the sky with arms stretched wide open. The Oblation, by Guillermo Tolentino, symbolizes selfless offering of one’s self to the nation.
The campus itself is an architectural and landscaping wonder. The pre war buildings are solid to this day. The Julian Nakpil classics stand mightily. There are wide streets with lanes for bikers and joggers. The lush green areas are shaded with Acacia trees, where you can quietly spend you afternoons picnicking and reading a book. The atmosphere in the campus is also cool, windy and refreshing. The Athletic Oval provides a running track and center field which is also used for soccer and other track and field events. The famous sunken garden is also the best place to play badminton, volleyball, football, frisbee or simply fly a kite.
UP also serves as sanctuary of diverse flora and fauna, and there are several endangered species among them. The UP Arboretum is a 16-hectare man-made forest that contains several tree species, mammals, birds and reptiles – some of which can only be found in the Philippines.
It is home to several museums. Scientific, Archeological, Geological and Human Interest Collections are in mini museums around the University. The Vargas Museum and Bulwagan ng Dangal houses paintings and sculpture of Filipino artists from different generations. The artworks from Amorsolo to Joya to modern masters represent the trademark Filipino creativity and retell the rich culture and history of the university and the Philippines as well. Walking around the campus, you’ll also see sculptures made of concrete and brass. Napoleon Abueva's work dots the landscape, from the University Gateway to the 9 Muses at the Faculty Center, not to mention the Crucifix and Altar base of the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. Needless to say, this church being the work of 4 National Artists is a national art treasure. Apart from Abueva's work, the Way of the Cross, a larger than life mural of the Passion of Christ that encircles the structure was painted by Vicente Manansala, the aisles emanating from the altar base by Arturo Luz, and the overall structure and design by Leandro Locsin.
