Sto. Domingo Church
One of the biggest and most famous churches here in the Philippines. Originally in Intramuros, but transferred to Quezon City after World War II along with the Lourdes Church along N.S. Amoranto. The church here in Quezon City was the sixth Sto. Domingo Church. The first was in 1588 made from nipa. It was gutted by fire in 1603. Earthquakes however, damaged the next Santo Domingo structures, which were destroyed by earthquakes in 1619, 1862 and 1863.
On December 27, 1941 the Japanese planes bombed Sto. Domingo Church and laid it to rubble. When the Dominicans cleared the place, they recovered the image of Our Lady of Naval, the icon of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. After the war the Dominicans proceeded to build a church in Quezon City during the La Naval feast and procession on Oct. 10, 1954, the church was inaugurated. Sto. Domingo Church was also canonically erected as the National Shrine of the Holy Rosary. The Feast of La Naval is the most important Catholic celebration in the City, Our Lady of Naval, in al her grand splendour celebrates in a procession around the streets of the city and stays at the main pavilion of the Quezon City Hall for a month where a daily novena is prayed.
